San Fransisco 49ers defensive end Aldon Smith had 19.5 sacks after 13 games last season. With three games to play, many thought he could easily of broken Michael Strahan’s record of 22.5 sacks. Unfortunately Smith was held sackless after game 13 all the way through the Super Bowl.
While disappoited, Smith said he’s not kicking himself over it.
It’s a goal, but I’m not punching myself in the face at the end of the season if I don’t get it,” Smith said. “I’m young, and I’m learning a lot and I’m getting better. My goal is really just to get better every year. As long as I do that, if it was 14, then 19.5, at that rate it should keep going. Hopefully, I should be able to trump that record and keep going
Smith was also asked if his shoulder injury affected him at all.
I’m a tough dude. Honestly, I’m able to fight through a lot of things that I think might hamper other people,” Aldon Smith said. “It was there and it affected me, but it is what it is
Another theory is that Justin Smith’s own injury allowed offenses to focus more on stopping Aldon. Regardless, like Smith said he’s young and he’s only going to continue to get better. In an age where there is too much focus put on individual records in a team sport, it’s nice to see a player focusing on the team part.
