Tom Pelissero of USA Today Sports expects the NFL to come down hard on 49ers linebacker Aldon Smith after he pleaded no contest to DUI and weapons charges on Wednesday.
If there were any doubt about the NFL suspending San Francisco 49ers linebacker Aldon Smith, it’s probably gone now. It’s matter of when, and for how long.
That’s the upshot on the football side of Smith’s no-contest plea Wednesday to three felony charges of possessing illegal assault rifles and misdemeanor DUI, stemming from separate incidents in 2012 and 2013.
The NFL doesn’t mess around when their players get in trouble with the law.
Now the league can come down on Smith, and it figures to come down hard.
Alcohol and guns are two of the league’s hot-button issues. In light of the multiple incidents involved – not including last month’s airport outburst, which the Los Angeles City Attorney’s Office is still considering for misdemeanor charges – the NFL could consider Smith a repeat offender and assess discipline accordingly.
