49ers head coach Jim Harbaugh told the media today that they are hopeful that linebacker Aldon Smith will return to the team in the “next couple of weeks” as he continues to get treatment for substance abuse an in-patient facility.
If that’s the case, Smith would return during the 49ers week nine bye week.
“I’m not real knowledgeable on exactly when that’s going to be, but I think it’s some point in the next couple of weeks,” Harbaugh said via the Sacramento Bee. “I hear things are going very well.”
Once Smith is released from the treatment facility, he’ll then have to turn himself in to authorities after being charged with three felony weapons charges.
Even though there have been some reports that Smith may not play again this season, Harbaugh remains hopeful.
“I’m hopeful,” he said. “(But) I’m not the definitive source on any announcement there.”
